WMDJ’s multimedia piece Voices is available to buy for the very first time.

With the exception of a two week exhibition at Middlesbrough’s Kitch-en Gallery in 2007, Voices has only been available to internet audiences until now. This 11 track DVD collection however, brings together all of the team’s work to date, with the odd never seen or heard before piece thrown in for good measure.

WMDJ is made up of three artists whose work and lives are firmly rooted in the North East: Tom Kelly (words/voice), Peter Dixon (photography) and Steve Thompson (soundscapes/music) collaborate virtually, using internet applications to evaluate and shape their ideas. The result is more human than technological though, and it’s quite original.

Kelly’s a prolific Gateshead-based poet and playwright with many writing credits to his name. Plays like Baby Love and I Left My Heart in Roker Park have made him a firm favourite with North East audiences. Peter Dixon’s a photographer from Jarrow with an unnatural desire to take photos of urban dereliction. Project producer Steve Thompson’s written songs for several recording artistes, including Sheena Easton, Elaine Paige and Celine Dion. He’s also produced records for himself and others and provides the soundscapes that build this evocative and moving multimedia piece. My favourite track is End or Beginning that has a (Gas-telephone-electricity) mantra that’s as infectious as any pop song I’ve heard lately.
